Introduction: The cerclage and cervical pessary represent therapeutic options in the prevention of preterm childbirth.
Objective: To characterize pregnant women with criteria for cerclage realization and placement of cervical pessary.
Methods: A descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out on 62 pregnant women with cerclage criteria or cervical pessary, belonging to 28 de Septiembre University Polyclinic in Santiago de Cuba who were referred by the Basic Team of Health to the provincial service of prematurity, from November, 2022 to August, 2023. The analyzed variables were: age, educational level, prematurity risk factors in obstetrics, cervical modifications observed in transvaginal echography, evaluation in provincial prematurity service, cerclage realization or placement of cervical pessary and reason of the non performance of these interventions.
Results: In the case material there was a prevalence of pregnant women over 30 years (51.6 %) and pre-university educational level (43.5 %). It was observed a higher prevalence of patients with induced abortions (76.4 %), index of cervical consistency among 5-10 percentile and with open internal cervical orifice (40.0 %, respectively). The most frequent preventive procedure was the cervical cerclage. The negativism of pregnant women was the main cause for not using cerclage and cervical pessary.
Conclusions: The cerclage and cervical pessary criteria identified in pregnant women allowed to evaluate the risk of preterm childbirth, what facilitated to determine the necessity of both procedures in prenatal care.
