Characterization of patients with COVID-19 in Guamá municipality
Abstract
Introduction: COVID-19 patients were reported in Santiago de Cuba in March 2020; however, transmission began in the Guama municipality in December of that year, with 2,449 confirmed cases and 20 deaths by the end of the third wave.
Objective: To characterize the epidemic of Covid-19 in Guamá municipality from December, 2020 to October, 2021.
Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out, to characterize the epidemic of Covid-19 in Guamá municipality from December, 2020 to October, 2021 according to demographic, clinical and epidemiologic variables of interest, including mortality from this cause.
Results: There was a prevalence of the 45-54 age group and the female sex; the most frequent symptoms were fever (59.4 %) and cough (53.5 %); 28.2 % of patients presented hypertension.
Conclusions: The COVID-19 was associated with a high morbidity and mortality in patients over 55 years with chronic diseases. There was a prevalence of the autochthonous source of infection and the symptomatic clinical form; corresponding to an upper respiratory infection. The mortality and lethality were similar to those in the province and the country.
