Application of platelet lysate in the treatment of alopecia areata
Abstract
Introduction: Alopecia areata, characterized by non-scarring hair loss, is an autoimmune and multifactorial disease with a high impact on the patient's skin aesthetics and their psychosocial sphere; therefore, platelet lysate is presented as a new hope for its treatment.
Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of topical autologous platelet lysate in patients with alopecia areata.
Methods: A quasi-experimental therapeutic intervention study was carried out in 50 patients with clinical and dermoscopic diagnosis of alopecia areata, treated at "Juan Bruno Zayas Alfonso" Hospital in Santiago de Cuba, from 2018 to 2020, divided into two groups: the study group received topical treatment with autologous platelet lysate and the control group received 0.1 % triamcinolone acetonide cream. The work was carried out jointly with the Renato Guitart Provincial Blood Bank to obtain topical platelet lysate. For statistical analysis, the computerized system SPSS 20.1, employed percentage, mean, standard deviation, and Fisher's test, were used.
Results: The majority of patients were between 29-38 years (46.0 %); 58.0 % were male, with multiple alopecic plaques, mainly located on the scalp, with evolution between 4 and 12 months, and clinical evaluations at baseline, one, two, and three months; were carried out. Treatment was effective in 94.0 % of cases.
Conclusions: Therapy with topical autologous platelet lysate is beneficial and without adverse reactions..
