Clinical and epidemiological characterization of patients with bruxism

Introduction: Bruxism can be physiological or pathological and is considered an existing neuropsychosocial phenomenon, with important repercussion in the stomatognathic system whose consequences lead to the masticatory dysfunction and the necessity of dental prosthesis.
Objective: To characterize patients with bruxism according to clinical, epidemiological variables.
Methods: An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study of 46 patients with bruxism, who were assisted in Mártires del Moncada Teaching Provincial Stomatological Clinic in Santiago de Cuba from March to September, 2022. The analyzed variables were age, sex, occupation, type of bruxism, clinical manifestations and prosthesis necessity. The applied instruments were the questionnaire, interrogation and clinical exam. A schedule was made for gathering the information, which was processed by means of the statistical system SPSS, version 22.0.
Results: There was a prevalence the 35-54 age group (45.6%), the female sex (58.6%), professionals as main occupation (28.3%) and sleep bruxism (69.5%), specifically that of eccentric type (65.2%). The total of the sample presented patterns of non functional waste; while 56.5% manifested pain and/or muscular fatigue and 89.1% had necessity of partial prosthesis.
Conclusions: Patients with bruxism are characterized by presenting patterns of occlusal waste, muscular pain and necessity of partial prosthesis.
