Abstract

Introduction: Currently, in Cuba there are no instruments published by national researchers to evaluate the communication skills in the doctor-patient relationship.

Objectives: To adapt and validate the "Catering to the patient" instrument to the Cuban cultural context.

Methods: A sequential exploratory study was conducted with a derivative approach, with a qualitative first phase and a quantitative second phase. Expert consultations and interviews were used as empirical methods. The pilot test was conducted with 13 Stomatology professors from the Faculty of Stomatology of Havana.

Results: The expert consultation yielded six key observations, which were considered in establishing the preliminary version of the instrument, which was applied in the pilot test. Linguistic comprehension of the instrument was considered good by 69.2%, and the average time spent on observation was 44.5 minutes. The instrument was well received, and its application was smooth. Based on the results of the pilot test, the preliminary version was adjusted, and the final version was established.

Conclusions: Through the adaptation of "Catering to the patient", a checklist for the observation "Patient care" was obtained - Cuban version of the Marburg evaluation instrument, a new national tool to measure communication skills in the doctor-patient relationship. The instrument exhibits content and construct validity, assessed through expert review and pilot test, with a high percentage of good linguistic comprehension and maximum acceptance for its applicability in an estimated time of 45 minutes.
