Updating on the obstructive sleep apnea syndrome in odontopediatrics

The obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is a serious disorder characterized by interruptions in the breathing pattern during sleeping, caused by the collapse of the upper respiratory track in the inspiration. It is a disease of multifactorial origin that requires a multidisciplinary approach. This study presents an up-to-date review on the obstructive sleep apnea syndrome in pediatrics from the perspective of the stomatological care. For that purpose, a systematic search was carried out on February, 2024 in MEDLINE, Pubmed and Scielo databases. The investigations published were included between 2020 and 2024 in English and Spanish that approached the topic in question. The studies that didn't fulfill the inclusion criteria were ruled out of the analysis. In pediatrics, this disease represents a prevalent condition; therefore, patients with this diagnosis need an early care. Dentists play a fundamental role in the identification of clinical signs, as well as in the opportune derivation to the corresponding specialists for a comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic evaluation.
