Risk of premature birth due to periodontitis in pregnant women with genital and urinary tract infections
Abstract
Introduction:.The periodontitis presence during the pregnancy is considered as a factor of risk of preterm birth however, it is ignored if it is associate or not to the presence of genitourinary infections. Objective: To determine the risk of preterm birth due to periodontitis with genitourinary infections in pregnant. Methods: An observational, analytical, case-control study was carried out among postpartum women admitted to maternity hospitals in Santiago de Cuba during the first 72 hours after delivery (N=1152). The sample was estimated in 250 cases (with preterm birth) and 500 controls (with full-term delivery), selected by random sampling. The OR for causal association was calculated, and strata were created using the crude OR and the Mantel-Haenzel OR with a 95% significance.
Results: The periodontitis with OR=6.3 and genitourinary infections with OR=1.9, constituted independent risk factors for preterm birth, without confound or modifying effect as the crude OR and the Mantel and Haenzel OR were similar, despite the differences between the ORs of the strata with p=0.58.
Conclusions: In this study, periodontitis constitute a real risk of preterm birth in pregnant women who suffer from it, independently of the coexistence of other genitourinary infections present during this period.
Keywords: preterm birth; periodontitis; urinary tract infections; pregnancy; genital infections.
