The presence of Cuban medicine in the urban toponymy of Santiago de Cuba

Introduction: Knowledge of a locality's history is of transcendental importance for transmitting values, patriotism, sentiments, convictions, and the rescue of local identity.
Objective: To present biographical summaries of 10 Cuban physicians whose names honor the streets of Santiago de Cuba, thereby enriching local history and culture.
Method: A historical investigation was conducted based on documentary review of 36 articles from national and international journals. The 18 most contemporary bibliographic references were selected as sources of information, using the analytical-synthetic, documentary, and historical-logical methods. The presentation was organized from south to east.
Results: The biographical summaries of the studied physicians are presented; 7 of them attained ranks in the Liberation Army, and one died in combat.
Conclusions: The biographical summaries presented constitute useful material for students of Medical Sciences, health professionals, and the general public, as they serve to strengthen feelings of patriotism, humanism, and national identity.
