Functional myopia in adolescents
Abstract
Introduction. Functional myopia is caused for stress on the visual system. The greater the number of near-vision tasks performed by the subject—such as reading time or working under poor lighting conditions—the more the refractive error increases.
Objective: To determine the main causes of functional myopia in adolescents attending the Saturnino Lora Provincial Hospital between February and May 2025.
Method: A descriptive study was conducted during the period from February to May 2025. The universe and sample consisted of 15 adolescents who attended the clinic with Functional Myopia, selected through non-probabilistic convenience sampling. The variables used in the study were age, sex, general and familial ocular history, time, means used for individual study, and activities performed during leisure time.
Results: The main causes of functional myopia in adolescents were identified, as well as the causative factors and their consequences.
Conclusion: The study demonstrated a prevalence among patients aged 15 to 17 years and among females. The increased use of electronic devices, a family history of myopia, and limited sun exposure were identified as the main causes in this study.
