Abstract

The life and work of Sigmund Freud, founder of psychoanalysis, whose influence persists in the understanding of the human mind, was explored. His legacy in modern psychology and psychiatry was contextualized, considering his historical relevance on anniversaries such as that of his birth in 1856. An exhaustive bibliographic review of primary and secondary scientific sources, a historiographical analysis of Freudian publications and contemporary criticism were carried out, with emphasis on theoretical, interpretative and empirical methods such as the consultation of digital archives. Freud's life trajectory from birth to death, his key contributions such as the unconscious, personality structure, and psychosexual stages were examined, along with criticism for lack of empiricism and biases. Interdisciplinary perspectives were integrated for a balanced view. Freud's legacy enriches medical historiography, highlighting the need to integrate his ideas with current evidence for a comprehensive understanding of the human mind.

Médico Especialista en Psiquiatría de nacionalidad cubana, que ejerce su profesión en Camagüey, Cuba. Desarrolla su actividad laboral como Especialista en Psiquiatria y Jefe del Departamente de Control de la Calidad en el Hospital Clínico-Quirúrgico-Docente "Octavio de la Concepción de la Pedraja" Orden "Carlos J Finlay". Con una sólida formación que incluye la especialidad de primer grado en Psiquiatría y la categoría docente de Profesor Instructor, complementa su perfil con una extensa formación continuada en diversas áreas de la salud mental y una activa participación en eventos y publicaciones científicas, tanto nacionales como internacionales. Además, es miembro de varias asociaciones profesionales, como la Sociedad Cubana de Psiquiatría.
