Clinical manifestations and epidemiological patterns in patients with lens-induced ocular hypertension
Abstract
Introduction: Lens opacity in the elderly and secondary ocular hypertension in Cuba cause a significant sensory deficit affecting life quality of older adults in our country.
Objective: To characterize patients with lens-induced ocular hypertension treated at the Ophthalmology Center of the Dr. Juan Bruno Zayas Alfonso General Hospital according to epidemiological and clinical variables.
Methods: A descriptive, observational, longitudinal study was conducted. The population consisted of 62 patients, and the variables analyzed were age, sex, clinical characteristics of phacogenic glaucoma, and gonioscopy findings. A literature review of the last 10 years was also performed, and the information obtained was compiled into a database using SPSS software.
Results: In the study population, female sex (60,0 %) and the age group of 60 years and older predominated. Regarding visual acuity, 63,0 % of patients overall had visual acuity below 0.1. When relating the characteristics of phacogenic glaucoma, 100,0 % of cases with phacomorphic and phacotoxic glaucoma were aged 60 years and older. Furthermore, in cases with phacotopic glaucoma, the majority were young patients.
Conclusions: In this study, females, and individuals over 60 years of age were the most affected groups, with visual acuity below 0.1 predominating, while phacotopic glaucoma was more frequent in young patients.
