Variations in c-reactive protein levels in patients with periodontitis

Introduction: Periodontitis is associated with elevated levels of C-reactive protein, which amplify the low-grade inflammatory response and facilitate systemic inflammation.
Objective: To identify variations in C-reactive protein levels in patients with periodontitis before and after periodontal treatment.
Methods: A prospective, longitudinal study was conducted in the Periodontology Department of the Juan Bruno Zayas Alfonso General Hospital in Santiago de Cuba, from July 2024 to April 2025. The non-random, purposive sample consisted of 34 patients diagnosed with periodontitis, who underwent complete periodontal treatment and had their C-reactive protein levels measured before and after treatment. Summary measures included absolute and relative frequencies, as well as statistical parameters such as arithmetic mean and standard deviation, with a significance level set at p < 0.05.
Results: Before periodontal treatment, 47,0 and 44,01 of patients presented moderate-risk and high-risk C-reactive protein levels, respectively. After treatment, patients achieved levels between low and moderate risk, represented by 47,0 and 50,0 % in each group, respectively. The mean variations were significant for all severity grades of periodontitis.
Conclusions: There were significant variations in C-reactive protein levels before and after periodontal treatment, supporting the possibility that controlling periodontal disease may help manage systemic inflammation in general diseases.
