Out-of-hospital mortality in Santiago de Cuba from 2013 to 2022

Abstract

Introduction: Mortality is one of the most relevant demographic variables and is considered a reliable indicator of well-being. Depending on where the death occurs, it is classified as in-hospital or out-of-hospital.

Objective: To describe some characteristics of out-of-hospital mortality in Santiago de Cuba province during the period 2013-2022.

Method: A descriptive, cross-sectional, observational study was conducted. The study population consisted of 37,641 out-of-hospital deaths. The data source was the death registry of the statistics department of the General Health Direction. Rates and percentages were used as summary measures.

Results: A significant increase in mortality was found during the years 2021-2022. The 87.0 % of the deceased were over 60 years of age. The municipalities of Palma Soriano II Frente, III Frente, and Guama had the highest rates. Cardiovascular diseases, malignant tumors, and cerebrovascular diseases were the leading causes of death. In addition, an increase in pneumonia, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease and dementia was observed.

Conclusions: Out-of-hospital mortality in Santiago de Cuba requires monitoring and further studies are necessary to identify risk factors and the influence of the quality of services provided, particularly to older adults, needs to be evaluated. This age group accounts for more than 85 % of deaths in this phenomenon, and families must play a leading role in this process.
