Blood viscosity and its diagnostic usefulness in metabolic syndrome in a population at risk

Introduction: Metabolic syndrome is characterized by risk factors that predispose to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease.
Objective: To evaluate the diagnostic usefulness of blood viscosity in metabolic syndrome in the population at risk.
Methods: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted in 160 patients, of whom 80 had a diagnosis of metabolic syndrome and 80 did not have this syndrome. Demographic, clinical, and laboratory variables were analyzed. Blood viscosity was calculated from total proteins and hematocrit. For the statistical analysis, the following indicators were estimated: sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value, Youden index, likelihood ratios, and the ROC curve (95.0%).
Results: Women over 65 years of age predominated among patients with metabolic syndrome, and blood viscosity was found to be elevated in 73.8% of these. In the Pearson correlation analysis, a strong positive relationship was obtained between viscosity and total proteins and hematocrit, and a negative relationship with HDL-cholesterol, with a high level of significance (p < 0.05). According to the area under the curve: 0.8438 (95.0%), it was evidenced that the method calculated for blood viscosity had good discriminative ability with high sensitivity (70.0%) and specificity (96.2%).
Conclusions: Calculated blood viscosity can be considered useful for complementing the comprehensive evaluation of patients with metabolic syndrome.
