Anthropometric Parameters in Type 2 Diabetic Patients
Abstract
Introduction: Somatometry, a branch of anthropological anatomy, allows the use of body measurements as predictive tools for cardiometabolic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Objective: To determine anthropometric parameters in type 2 diabetic patients belonging to a health area in the municipality of Santiago de Cuba during the three-year period 2022–2025.
Methods: A descriptive, prospective, cross-sectional study was conducted on anthropometric indicators in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and their association with the risk of cardiometabolic diseases. The following variables were assessed: age, sex, weight, height, body mass index, abdominal perimeter, waist circumference, hip circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, and waist-to-height ratio.
Results: Female diabetic patients predominated in the age group of 65–74 years. Abdominal perimeter was greater in women, indicating an increase in visceral fat in this gender. The waist-to-hip ratio was within the low-risk range for both sexes, denoting the presence of the disease without evident abdominal obesity. The waist-to-height ratio showed a low risk of obesity-related diseases, with women being the sex contributing to this condition.
Conclusions: The combined use of waist-to-hip ratio, body mass index, and waist-to-height ratio allows for a comprehensive individual assessment, which could justify the need for personalized prevention and treatment strategies.
