Cerebellar syndrome treatment using natural and traditional medicine

EspañolAbstract
The cerebellum, an important organ of the central nervous system, is now recognized as responsible for modulating motor, affective, and cognitive functions. Damage to its structure or connections gives rise to cerebellar syndrome. With the aim of describing the physiological and pathophysiological foundations of this syndrome, as well as the main Natural and Traditional Medicine modalities used in its treatment, a narrative literature review was conducted. To this end, various electronic databases, the Cuban Virtual Health Library, and Google Scholar were consulted. The search was performed in Spanish, English, Portuguese, and Korean, with a main time filter between 2019 and 2026. The organization of the cerebellum into three phylogenetic regions—archicerebellum, paleocerebellum, and neocerebellum—and the uniform structure of its cortex as responsible for its capacity as a universal modulator of motor, affective, and cognitive functions, were addressed. The heterogeneity of its clinical manifestations, grouped into motor, vestibulocerebellar, and cognitive-affective syndromes, was analyzed. Acupuncture showed the greatest scientific support for its treatment, with the capacity to promote neuroplasticity and exert neuroprotective effects. It was concluded that Natural and Traditional Medicine constitutes a promising and safe therapeutic alternative, although a greater number of controlled clinical trials are required to consolidate the available evidence and standardize protocols.
