Historical, clinical, educational and research trajectory of the Geriatrics Service of the Saturnino Lora Provincial Hospital
Abstract
Population aging constitutes one of the main challenges for contemporary healthcare systems. InCuba, this process has driven the development of geriatrics and specialized services for the comprehensive care of older adults. This paper aims to describe the historical, organizational, healthcare, teaching, and research trajectory of the Geriatrics Service at Saturnino Lora Provincial Hospital in Santiago de Cuba. The Geriatrics Service was established in 1999 as a ward attached to the Internal Medicine Service and subsequently consolidated as an independent service. Over more than two decades, it has strengthened comprehensive care for older adults through comprehensive geriatric assessment, multidisciplinary care, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, training of geriatrics specialists and gerontogeriatric nursing professionals, as well as the development of research and community activities in various municipalities of the province.
At Saturnino Lora Provincial Hospital, it constitutes a reference for eastern Cuba due to its contributions to the development of geriatrics, human resource training, and comprehensive care for older adults, thus contributing to the strengthening of the National Health System. A historical investigation was conducted with a qualitative approach and descriptive design, employing the historical-logical method, analysis-synthesis, and induction-deduction, as well as documentary review and testimonial interviews with professionals linked to the creation and development of the service.
