Clinical and evolutionary aspects in pregnant women with probable Oropouche fever from semi-urban communities
Abstract
Introduction: The beginning of 2026 unfolds within a complex and dynamic epidemiological scenario, where the threat of arboviral diseases is being rapidly redefined.
Objective: To characterize the population of pregnant women with probable Oropouche fever belonging to semi-urban communities in Santiago de Cuba province, according to selected clinical and evolutionary variables.
Methods: A descriptive observational study of the case series type was conducted in pregnant women attended and followed up in the community, between the months of May 2024 and May 2025.
Results: Fever and headache predominated in the series (93.3% and 92.0%, respectively). The gastroenteric clinical form marked important differences in its presentation (64.0%). Dehydration (69.3%) and electrolyte disturbances (61.3%) were frequent clinical complications. On the other hand, among obstetric complications, threatened abortion (12.0%) and completed abortion (4.0%) marked the difference. Others, such as fetal demise and induced abortion, were also of interest.
Conclusions: The clinical and evolutionary presentations of pregnant women with probable Oropouche fever virus infection manifest variably, although non-severe presentations mark the difference. There are digestive and obstetric complications with some differences from what is reported in the specialized literature.
