Abstract

Acute mediastinitis due to esophageal perforation causes difficult clinical situations associated with a significant morbidity and mortality; for its treatment a high-level of diagnostic suspicion, good clinical judgement, as well as an appropriate control by the multidisciplinary teams that provide varied alternative and therapeutic procedures to be used, are necessary. In spite of the scientific and technological advances, the treatment continues being controversial and it has evolved without a consent that defines the superiority of one on the other; that is why it is important to deepen in the different cognitive aspects on the topic, in general, and its historical variations, in particular.
