Introduction: Patients with acute cholecystitis are frequently assisted in the emergency services of general surgery.
Objective: To characterize patients undergoing emergency surgery due to acute cholecystitis according to clinical, diagnostic, therapeutic and evolutive variables.
Methods: A descriptive and observational study was carried out on 450 patients undergoing emergency surgery due to acute cholecystitis in the General Surgery Service of Saturnino Lora Teaching Clinical-Surgical Provincial Hospital in Santiago de Cuba, from 2019 to 2022.
Results: A prevalence of women was observed (78.2%). The most frequent personal pathological history were chronic cholelithiasis (55.1%), hypertension (29.8%), obesity (28.4%) and diabetes mellitus (17.3%). Lithiasis was present in 91.7% of the patients, and early cholecystectomy was the election procedure; the laparoscopic way was used in 52.7% of those affected.
Conclusions: Although surgical interventions, both elective and urgent, were limited during the period analyzed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, patients operated on due to acute cholecystitis through preferably early, conventional and laparoscopic cholecystectomy present acceptable levels of morbidity and mortality.Downloads
