Abstract

Introduction: The electric bioimpedance, and within her the phase angle, have been shown as mortality predictors in several medical affections; its association with biomedical variables does not rule out the increment of its predictive value regarding this event in those patients infected by SARS-CoV-2.

Objective: To build a predictive model of death in patients with Covid-19.

Methods: An analytical observational cohort study was carried out from July to August, 2021 at Dr. Joaquín Castillo Duany Teaching Clinical Surgical Hospital in Santiago de Cuba. Three hundred and twelve patients diagnosed with Covid-19 were investigated.

Results: In the studied cohort, the mean age of patients was 56.7±17.2 years, there was a prevalence of the male sex (77.9 %), nevertheless women had higher mortality and superior mean age with 60.8±15.9 and 28.6 % years respectively. Besides, 22.1 % of the total of patients studied died. In the multivaried analysis, the phase angle, the lactodehydrogenase and the arterial oxygen pressure/inspiratory oxygen fraction ratio was significantly related to mortality. The built pattern showed good predictive capacity, with an area under the curve that was increased from 0,92-0,96 between the first and third days of hospitalization.

Conclusion: The association of some biomarkers and the phase angle with the risk of death in patients with Covid-19 is evident. Also, it is possible to use the pattern proposed model as a predictive instrument, by identifying the patients with a higher probability of dying.
