Alfabetismo en salud: bases conceptuales y evidencia en odontologÃa
Resumen
Si el alfabetismo en salud se basa en la capacidad de lograr y mantener un buen estado sanitario en interacción con el medio social (sistemas de salud), la evidencia empÃrica consiste en demostrar la relación directa entre ambas categorÃas.  En odontologÃa, el alfabetismo en salud bucal se refiere a su impacto en la salud de las propias personas o de quienes están a su cargo, por ejemplo en el binomio madre-hijo. Actualmente existen varios instrumentos psicométricos para medir esos 2 alfabetismos, clasificados en: reconocimiento y pronunciación de términos médicos, comprensión y preguntas de control; pero no se dispone de herramientas validadas en español para evaluar lo concerniente al odontológico. Precisamente por esa última limitación, en Latinoamérica escasean las investigaciones sobre alfabetismo en salud bucal, lo cual equivale a oportunidades perdidas para mejorar la salud bucal de la población ecuatoriana.
